Stump grinding and removal in Hampton Roads, VA by Virginia Commonwealth Land Management

A leftover stump is a trip hazard, a mowing obstacle and a home for insects. It can also send up new sprouts for years. Stump Grinding takes it down below ground level without digging up your yard.

The grinder chips the stump into small pieces. Those grindings can be raked back into the hole or removed so you can fill the spot with topsoil and seed.

Grinding works for most yards, but some projects need the whole stump gone. Foundations, driveways, patios, pools and new plantings often call for the stump and main roots to come out of the ground entirely.

We excavate around the stump, pull it and its main roots, and backfill the hole so the ground is ready for what comes next.

When to Call for Stump Grinding

You Keep Mowing Around It

A stump in the middle of the lawn slows down every mow and can damage mower blades.

It's Sprouting Again

Some trees keep sending up shoots from the stump. Grinding it out stops the regrowth.

It's a Trip Hazard

Stumps in walkways, play areas and yards are easy to miss, especially once grass grows around them.

You Want to Replant

Grinding clears the spot so you can seed, sod or plant something new nearby.

When to Call for Stump Removal

You're Building Over the Spot

Foundations, slabs, driveways and patios should not sit on top of decaying roots.

You're Clearing a Lot

When a lot is being cleared for construction, stumps usually need to be fully removed.

You Want to Plant in the Same Spot

Removing the root ball makes room for a new tree or garden bed.

Grinding Won't Be Deep Enough

Some projects need the ground cleared deeper than grinding can reach.

Why Not Just Leave the Stump?

Old stumps can attract termites, carpenter ants and fungus. They're a tripping and mowing hazard, and some trees keep sending up new sprouts from the roots.

After Grinding

The wood chips can be left to fill the hole or hauled away. Once the chips are cleared and topsoil is added, you can reseed grass the same season.

When Full Stump Removal Makes Sense

  • You're building a house, addition, shed or garage in that spot.
  • A driveway, patio or walkway is going over it.
  • You want to plant a new tree in the same place.
  • The site needs to be graded or leveled afterward.

What's Involved

The stump and main root ball are dug out, leaving a hole that's backfilled and left to settle. It's more work than grinding and costs more, but it clears the ground of most major roots so nothing interferes with foundations, pavement or new planting.

Old stumps left in place can attract termites, carpenter ants and fungus.

Stump Grinding & Removal Questions

More questions? See our general FAQs or call 804-338-2089.

How deep do you grind?

Below ground level, deep enough to lay topsoil and grass over it. If you need extra depth for a specific project, tell us when we quote.

Does grinding remove the roots?

It removes the stump and nearby surface roots. The deeper root system stays in the ground and breaks down over time.

What's the difference from Stump Removal?

Grinding chips the stump in place. Removal digs the whole stump and main roots out of the ground.

How is Stump Grinding priced?

By stump size and count. You'll get a written price first.

Is Stump Removal better than grinding?

It depends on the project. Grinding is faster and less disruptive for lawns. Removal is better when you're building or need the roots gone.

Will it leave a big hole?

There will be a hole where the stump was, and we backfill and level it before we leave.

Do you check for utilities first?

Yes. Underground utilities are marked through Virginia 811 before any digging.
