Tree trimming in Hampton Roads, VA by Virginia Commonwealth Land Management

Trees change as they grow. Limbs stretch over roofs, scrape siding, hang low over driveways and drop dead wood onto yards and vehicles. Trimming takes care of the problem branches before they turn into damage.

We start by looking at the tree and talking through what's bothering you, then cut back only what needs to go. The goal is a tree that stays healthy and a property that's easier and safer to use.

When to Call for Tree Trimming

Branches Hang Over Your House

Limbs over a roof or against siding can damage shingles, gutters and walls in the next storm. Cutting them back removes the risk.

Dead or Broken Limbs Are Showing

Dead wood and hanging broken branches can fall without warning. Removing them protects people, pets and cars below.

Your Driveway or Yard Feels Crowded

Low branches that block vehicles, walkways or sunlight can be raised or thinned to open the space back up.

A Storm Left Damage

After high winds, split and hanging limbs should come down before they fall on their own.

When Trimming Is Needed

Limbs Over the Roof

Branches rubbing shingles damage them in every storm. Keep limbs 6 to 10 feet off the roof.

Dead or Hanging Branches

Dead wood snaps first in high wind. Remove it any time of year.

Before Hurricane Season

Spring trimming removes the limbs most likely to end up on your house, car or power lines.

Blocked Light, Views or Walkways

Thinning and raising the canopy opens up sunlight and clearance.

Crossing or Weak Branches

Removing them early prevents splits and bigger problems later.

The Best Time to Trim

For most trees, late winter while the tree is dormant: less stress, fewer pests and diseases, and the branch structure is easy to see without leaves.

Exceptions: avoid pruning oaks in spring and early summer, when beetles that spread oak wilt are active. Trim dogwoods, redbuds and other spring bloomers right after they flower. Maples and birches may “bleed” sap in late winter, which looks alarming but doesn't hurt the tree.

Dead, cracked or dangerous limbs should come down right away, whatever the season.

Trim or Remove?

Trimming is usually enough when the tree is healthy and the problem is a few limbs. If more than about half the tree is dead, the trunk is cracked or hollow, or the lean toward your home is getting worse, removal is usually the safer long-term choice. We'll give you an honest answer.
